under below underneath beneath 的区别

under, below, underneath 和beneath 这四个词都有“在……下面”的意思，但它们在语境上的使用是有区别的。

1. 在三维空间上，当表示一个物体（在垂直方向上）在另一个物体下面时，要用under，如:
The ball is under the table. 球在桌子下面。
I guess your letter is under that book. 我猜你的信应该在那本书下面。

2. underneath 与 under 都表示在空间位置上某物的下方，但 underneath 一般强调处在下方的物体被覆盖或隐藏，如：
We found it underneath the sofa. 我们在沙发下边找到它。
There are a lot of dust underneath the carpet. 地毯下面有许多灰尘。

beneath 可以表示 underneath 的相同意思，但该词是更加正式的文学用语。

3. below 用于表示低于某一参照高度、平面、标准等。
The language development of those kids are below average. 那些小孩的语言能力发展低于一般水平。
The body was visible below the surface of the lake. 可以见到尸体在湖水下面。
Please do not write below this line. 请不要写在这条线的下面。
Skirts must be below the knee. 裙子要长过膝盖以下。

4. below 常用于表示上下的两个事物处于同一建筑内，同一座山、或同一部位等，如：
They live in the apartment below us. 他们住在我们楼下的套间里。
Can you see those trees below the summit? 你能看到山峰下那些树吗？

5. 表示低于某一刻度用 below; 表示少于某一数量用 under。
The temperature was below zero last night. 昨晚温度在零度以下。
It's supposed to drop below freezing tonight. 今天温度应该会降到冰点以下。
We were able to raise just under 1,500 dollars. 我们只能筹到不到1500美元的款。
The new legislation will allow employees to work under 7 hours a day. 新法规将允许雇员一天只上7小时的班。

6. under 可以表示物品的层次关系，如：
I have a t-shirt under my jacket. 我在夹克衫里边穿了一件T恤衫。

7. under 这个词还可与表示情绪与活动的词连用。如，
under stress 承受压力
under control 处于控制之下, 可控
under construction 在建造中

8. 从统计角度看，under 是这四个词中最常用的一个，其次是below, beneath 和 underneath。
