on over above 的区别

这三个介词有相似的意义，都可以表示“在……之上”的意思。有时可以用作同义词。但在一些情况下，它们有明显的用法区别。

1. on 表示“在某物之上”时，必须是与该物体接触。over 有时可以用来代替on，但它强调部分或全部遮住/覆盖。而on只是在某物上面，不一定大面积覆盖。
I put my hand on/over her mouth. 我用手放在/按住她的嘴。
Lay the blanket on/over his legs. 把毯子盖在他的腿上。

注意当表示在某物之上，没有覆盖之意时，则需要用 on，而不用 over，如：
Please leave the glasses on the table. 请把杯子放在桌上。(不能用over)
a picture on the wall 墙上的画。 (不能用over)
sit on the grass 坐在草地上。(不能用over)

on有时是表面的一部分。这种情况也不能用over。
a drawing on the blackboard 黑板上画的图。(不能用over)
Most people put butter on their toast. 大多数人会把黄油涂在面包上。 (不能用over)

2. over可以表示在某人/某物的上方但不接触。on 没有这个用法。
There was a big storm cloud over our heads. 我门头顶上有一大片暴风云。
They held a large umbrella over her. 他们给她打着一把大伞。

试比较以下两句:
There was a lamp over the table. 桌子上方悬挂着一盏灯。
There was a lamp on the table. 桌上放着一盏灯。

3. above 表示某物在位置上高于另一物。强调的是位置的高低。这个意义上有时与over是同义词。但如果只是表示位置上的高位，则只能用above。
We were flying above/over the clouds. 我们在云层上面飞行。
They built a new room above/over the garage. 他们在车库上方建了一间新房。

注意，当指的是位置上的高低，而不是在（垂直）上面时，只能用above，而不用over，如:
The water came above our knees. 水没过了我们的膝盖。
Only the tip of an iceberg pokes up above water. 只有冰山的尖端突出于水面。

另外，above还可以指抽象意义上的等级高低，如：
A president is above a vice-president.　总统的职位高于副总统。
A captain in the navy ranks above a captain in the army. 海军上尉军衔高于陆军上尉。

4. over 可以表示从一边移动到另一边。above没有这个用法。
We flew over the Grand Canyon. 我们飞过了大峡谷。
They ran over the grass. 他们跑过了草地。

5. above 和 over 都可以表示“多于”。但above与最低水平或某固定点关联。而over 一般与数目、数量、年龄、金钱和时间等连用。

The village is 1,000 meters above sea level. 这个村子海拔1000米。
Temperatures will rise above zero tonight. 今晚气温将升到零度以上。

It costs over ten dollars. 它值十多美元。
We waited over two hours. 我们等了两个多小时。
